What is an air source heat pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), also known as an air-to-water source heat pump, operates by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it to water.

This heated water can then be used to warm your living spaces through radiators or underfloor heating. Additionally, the ASHP can heat water stored in a hot water cylinder, providing hot water for taps, showers, and baths.

The process involves utilizing the ambient heat present in the air, even in colder temperatures, and amplifying it to generate a sufficient heat source for domestic heating and hot water needs.

ASHPs are recognized for their energy efficiency and environmentally friendly operation, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and increased sustainability in home heating systems.

Air Source Heat Pumps FAQ's

The duration of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) installation hinges on factors like system size and property accessibility. Following a survey, installations generally span about 2 working days. This timeframe underscores the efficiency and relatively swift implementation of ASHP systems. The process involves meticulous planning and execution to ensure a seamless integration that maximizes the benefits of renewable heating. From site assessment to the final stages of installation, our specialists work diligently to minimize disruption and promptly provide households with an eco-friendly and energy-efficient heating solution. This aligns with the broader objectives of the ECO4 scheme, promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies for enhanced home energy efficiency

Determining the suitability of your property for an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) involves evaluating several key factors. The type of fuel currently used for heating, existing insulation levels, and available space for installation are pivotal considerations. ASHP installations require adequate outdoor space on a wall or on the ground, ensuring sufficient airflow for optimal functionality. A comprehensive assessment is conducted to ascertain compatibility, taking into account your property’s specific characteristics. This personalized approach ensures that the transition to an ASHP aligns with your property’s unique attributes, optimizing energy efficiency and contributing to the overarching goals of the ECO4 scheme in promoting sustainable and eco-friendly heating solutions.

Maintaining an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) is a straightforward process, emphasizing simplicity and user-friendliness. As part of routine upkeep, individuals are encouraged to periodically inspect the air inlet grill and evaporator, ensuring they remain free from leaves and debris. This uncomplicated maintenance routine is designed to uphold the pump’s efficiency and longevity, promoting optimal performance. By incorporating these straightforward checks into regular household activities, ASHP owners can contribute to the longevity and effectiveness of their heating system. This user-friendly approach aligns with the ECO4 scheme’s commitment to encouraging sustainable technologies that are accessible and manageable for homeowners, fostering a seamless transition to energy-efficient solutions.

Typically, Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) installations fall under the category of ‘Permitted Development,’ eliminating the need for planning permission. This streamlined process facilitates a smoother transition for homeowners seeking to embrace renewable energy solutions. However, it is advisable to confirm this status with the local planning office, as regulations may vary. While the majority of ASHP installations are likely to proceed without planning permission, consulting with local authorities ensures compliance and offers homeowners peace of mind. The ECO4 scheme supports the adoption of eco-friendly technologies, and the simplified planning process aligns with its mission to make sustainable practices accessible and hassle-free for individuals transitioning to energy-efficient solutions.

Transitioning from a boiler to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) requires a comprehensive approach. Initiating the process involves conducting a thorough heat loss calculation for the property. This evaluation considers insulation, windows, and doors, identifying areas for improvement to enhance energy efficiency. Communicating these findings to homeowners ensures informed decision-making. Additionally, installing an ASHP necessitates the incorporation of a hot water storage cylinder, which might require new installation or replacement of the existing cylinder. The design of the heat pump cylinder emphasizes a larger coil for improved heat transfer and reheat times, optimizing the system’s overall performance. This meticulous consideration of property specifics aligns with ECO4’s commitment to promoting tailored and efficient eco-friendly solutions for homeowners.

The urgency in promoting Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) aligns with the UK government’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Acknowledging that home heating significantly contributes to carbon emissions, the heating industry is proactively addressing this issue. The push to install ASHPs is a strategic move to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, a major step towards meeting the carbon-neutral target. By encouraging the adoption of appliances like ASHPs that don’t burn fossil fuels, the industry aims to pave the way for a sustainable and eco-friendly future. Embracing this shift now allows homeowners to be proactive in aligning with evolving environmental standards and contributes to the collective effort to combat climate change over the next three decades.

When considering the installation of an air source heat pump (ASHP), it’s essential to allocate sufficient space for optimal performance. The ASHP should have ample room around it to ensure a consistent and unobstructed airflow. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of planning permission restrictions, which may necessitate the ASHP being within 1 meter of your property boundary. This is a key consideration in the planning and placement of the ASHP, ensuring compliance with regulations while maintaining an effective and efficient heating solution. Consulting with local planning authorities and adhering to these guidelines is fundamental to a successful ASHP installation, balancing functionality with regulatory requirements.

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) typically produce a noise level of around 60-65 decibels (Db). To put this into perspective, it’s comparable to the sound of a group of people engaged in conversation in a room. It’s important to note that this represents the maximum noise output, and ASHPs do not operate at full capacity continuously. The elevated noise levels are primarily experienced during periods of extreme cold and high demand. Moreover, since the ASHP unit is installed outdoors, any operational noise is generally less noticeable indoors. This consideration ensures that while ASHPs have some noise output, it is generally within reasonable limits, providing effective heating without causing significant disruptions.

Correct radiator sizing is crucial in a heat pump installation. Radiators must be appropriately sized to heat the room to the required temperature. Most existing radiators are designed for an 80-degree boiler flow temperature, so their size may need adjustment to suit the lower flow temperatures of an air source heat pump (ASHP). If the homeowner also invests in improvements such as insulation, thermally efficient windows, and doors to minimize heat loss from the home, the necessary increase in radiator size can be kept to a minimum. This holistic approach ensures an optimized ASHP system that aligns with the property’s energy efficiency measures.

Absolutely, an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) can seamlessly work alongside a boiler in what is known as a Hybrid system, a choice gaining popularity. In this setup, the property primarily relies on the heat pump for heating and hot water. During system commissioning, the controller is configured to allow the boiler to provide supplementary heating and hot water in specific conditions, including instances where the temperature outside drops too low, the heat pump cannot reach the required temperature within a set time limit, the cylinder needs to carry out a legionella cycle, or if the heat pump encounters a failure. This hybrid approach ensures efficient and reliable heating under various circumstances.
